Edward M. Hayhurst letters, 1862 September-December
Contains sixteen letters written between September 5 and December 20, 1862. The letters were written during Hayhurst's solo journey to join the 124th Ohio Infantry in Cincinnati, Ohio, then during their travels down through Camp Harrison to Camp Cleveland and sojourn there until the end of December 1862. It also includes original enclosures two of newspaper clippings.

Contains ten original letters from Edward to either his father Isaac or his mother Louisa written in January 1862. Letters were written while traveling from Ford House in Louisville, Kentucky, to Camp Senter near Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and during the unit's stay there until the end of January 1863. It also includes a clipping from (it is supposed) the Cleveland Daily Herald, dated January 30.

Letters were written while Hayhurst's unit was traveling on the Ohio and Cumberland rivers from the area of Cannelton, Indiana, down through Nashville to their main camp in Franklin, Tennessee.

Letters were written while in camp or headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, eleven days of which Hayhurst spent in the field hospital with some fever that temporarily damaged his hearing. It also includes (chronologically first) a copy of an army Special Order detailing Edward as Clerk in the Assistant Adjutant General's Office at headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, under George K. Speed.

The letters were all written while at army headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee as clerk; during April, the unit narrowly missed being called into battle, and Hayhurst was field-hospitalized for dysentery. Also included is an army circular from the "Union League of Allegheny Co., Pa. to the Army of the Cumberland."

The letters were written either from camp headquarters in Triune, Tennessee, or during the unit's journey through Readyville, Beechgrove, and Manchester, Tennessee, at the end of the month. The 124th participated in small skirmishes every few days, as well as a minor battle, while in Triune.
