Scope and Contents Handwritten diary. Shoemaker describes his overland journey from Porter, Cass County, Michigan to Hangtown (later Placerville), California, in 1850. Upon arrival, he "bought a shovel & a pick the gold dust for to dig." Daily entries are moderately descriptive and mention camping locations, travelling conditions, encounters with Indians, and daily mileage. Handwritten and signed letter, dated 1849, and addressed to "Dear Rebecca." Schrock describes his overland journey from Missouri to California to visit the gold fields. He also writes about the reputation the Mormons had at the time. He says that "vegetables, milk, butter, cheese and other things" could be purchased at the "Mormon City" (Salt Lake City, Utah) but adds that the Mormons often cheated people coming West.

Handwritten, printed, and signed documents concerning the travels of Thomas P. Shrock. The materials include two handwritten maps of eastern Mexico in 1850 made while Shrock was returning from the gold fields in California; a guarantee of safe conduct through Colorado in 1861 signed by William Gilpin, governor of Colorado; and a loyalty oath to the United States in 1861 signed by C. R. Jennison, Kansas Cavalry.
