Scope and Contents Handwritten diaries with a typed copy of one volume. Martin kept diaries apparently in three volumes. The second and third volumes covering the time from 1854 to 1857 are found with the collection. A typed copy of the first diary covering the years from 1853 to 1854 is also included. Martin writes about his work as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. He returned to the United States in 1857 and traveled by rail to Iowa City, Iowa. Holograph notebook (plus 4 p. partial typescript containing only the journal entries) which contains a record of depts, expenses, and later experiences after Matthews left his home in Colon, Michigan on April 15, 1851 bound for California by boat. The journal describes his travels through Mexico from Vera Cruz to Acapulco, comments about the U.S. - Mexican War, and gives details of his boat trip to San Francisco.

Photocopy of a typewritten biography. Cawood writes about Ane Nielsen Mickelsen (1825-1909). Mickelsen was born Ane Nielsen in Denmark. She heard about the Mormon Church from Erastus Snow and came to Salt Lake City, Utah. She later lived in Cedar City and Parowan, Utah, and married Rasmus Mickelsen.

Letter from "I.S.M." in Iowa to Charles Custis in Ohio apologizing for not writing on time and saying that he or she took a walk down to the Mormon encampment near their home where three thousand Mormons, mostly from England, were living while on their way to Salt Lake City. Dated May 10, 1853.

Eleven typewritten copies and one holograph. In letters to his wife, Rhoda, Millikan describes the difficulties and fears of a man travelling over the plains to Salt Lake Valley, Utah, and on to the California gold fields. His letters, while descriptive of the terrain and events encountered, are full of love and yearning for home and family.
