Scope and Contents

Collection contains recordings and transcriptions of oral history interviews conducted by E. Dale LeBaron while he was visiting Africa. These interviews are with converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from various countries of Africa. The items were transcribed by the College of Religious Instruction at Brigham Young University. Back-up copies of the transcriptions are included on floppy disks. The collection dates from 1979 to 2000.

Ann Lee tells about her family's conversion to Mormonism in Australia, their emigration to Utah, and her life as a Mormon woman in southern Utah. Handwritten letter from Leonard, missionary bishop of Salt Lake City for the Episcopal Church, to Miss A. P. Stevenson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, dated January 30, 1900. The letter notes the receipt of a note and gift from Miss Stevenson, mentions an outing he took to rest from his labors, and mentions sending a photograph of himself (not included). The letter is written on "Bishop's House" letterhead, and includes an envelope postmarked January 31, 1900.

Handwritten and signed certificate dated 11 Nov. 1833. Leonard certifies that Eduard Helmer is a faithful member of the local Presbyterian Church. The certificate is written on two pages of a folded sheet of paper. On the interior portion is found an apparent effort at writing a fictional romantic story.

Scope and Contents Letter dated 16 July 1866 from Inland, Iowa. This is a powerful letter of religious zeal from "Millie" to her "Parents, Brothers, and Sisters." In the letter, she describes an elaborate vision she had where God showed her "a cave in the hill." In the cave were some "little casks" and she "saw the rich gleam of gold near them."
