Frank Whitaker interview with Albert E. Haines

Typescript of an interview conducted by Frank Whitaker on 29 Jan. 1985 for Hillam's War Project at Brigham Young University. Haines talks about his training in the United States Army, his deployment to combat in October 1944 as a platoon leader, and his participation in the battles of the Hurtgen Forest and the Bulge. He was severely wounded by machine gun fire on 13 Jan. 1945.

Scope and Contents

Typescript of an interview taken from the included sound tapes. The interview was conducted by Frank Whitaker on 3 March 1985 for Ray Hillam's War Project. Lincoln Whitaker was from Ogden, Utah, and was drafted into the United States Army in January 1944. He landed in Normandy, France, about 25 days after D-Day. He first saw action in Gilenchirchen, Germany, and describes his many combat experiences.

Emilia Wilson letter

Photocopy of a handwritten and signed letter dated 4 July 1836 and addressed to a Samuel Turrentine in North Carolina. The item was written in Clay County, Missouri, by A. Wilson and Emilia Wilson. The Wilsons write about the organization of the citizens of Missouri to resist the Mormons.

J. C. Wilson letters

Handwritten letters with typewritten copies. Wilson applies for his bounty for joining the army in Illinois. He also writes three letters about army life while stationed in Tennessee in November of 1864. Two of the letters were addressed to Samuel Kirkpatrick in Illinois. Also included is a letter to Kirkpatrick and his tax receipt for 1871.

Albert Winkler interview with David Raymond Cox

Typescript of an interview conducted by Albert Winkler of Brigham Young University's office of Special Collections on 4 May 2001 in Cox's home in Ogden, Utah. Cox talks about his experiences as a Marine during World War II. He was a lieutenant of artillery on Saipan Island during the battle. He and his men were involved in repulsing a banzai attack by the Japanese and in the destruction of two enemy tanks.
