Photocopy of a handwritten and signed letter dated 27 March 1842 and addressed to Andrew Thomas McReynolds, Sloan's cousin. Sloan writes about the activities of the Mormons in Missouri and Illinois and explains the basic doctrines of the Mormon Church.

Photocopies of a handwritten diary and a typescript copy. Smith's materials include an autobiography of his early life in Massachusetts and his experiences with the Mormons in Far West, Missouri. His diary starts in 1842 and includes information on where he lived and his experiences in the Mormon Battalion.

Azariah Smith autobiography and diaries

Photocopy of a microfilm copy of a handwritten autobiography and diary. Smith was born in New York in 1828 and joined the Mormon Church in 1839. He moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840. He kept a diary during his service with the "Mormon Battalion" during the War with Mexico from 1846 to 1848. Smith married in 1850 and moved to Sanpete Valley in 1850. He lived in Manti, Utah, and wrote about his activities and experiences there.

Photocopies of handwritten diaries. Smith writes about coming to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836 and his subseqent moves to Nauvoo, Illinois, and to Utah in 1851. He held numerous positions in the Mormon Church and was active as a businessman and as a politician.

Smith writes about being born in Pecham, Vermont, migrating to Haun's Mill, Missouri, what she observed during the "Haun's Mill Massacre," mob activities against the Mormons in Missouri, her life in Nauvoo, Illinois, her miraculous healing, her association with the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, and her sister's marriage to Joseph Smith as a plural wife.

Typewritten autobiography and photocopies of handwritten letters received by Smith. Also included are typescripts of Job Smith's "Recollections" of the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and photocopies of handwritten and typewritten certificates. The letters are from prminent Mormon Church leaders. Also included is a photocopy of a handwritten patriarchal blessing received by Smith.

Scope and Contents Contains seven journals of John Lyman Smith, and other autobiographical manuscripts, as wells as a bound typescript volume of an autobiography/journal. The journals include accounts of persecutions in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois, pioneering in Utah, Lyman's two missions to Europe, and his service as president of the Swiss-Italian and the Swiss-Italian-German missions.
