Contains diaries and notebooks kept by John Steele, including his Mormon Battalion diary, dated 1846-1847, and a Paiute/English language dictionary, dated 1851. Also includes a typescript of Steele's diary that was created in 1961 but includes entries from 1840 to 1877. Also includes some biographical notes on various members of John Steele's family. Dated 1846-1961.

The collection contains handwritten letters, a reminiscence, and a draft for an obituary. The reminiscence is by Sarah Melissa Johnson and relates to her life growing up in Nauvoo, Illinois. She mentions how her father was called to protect the Prophet Joseph Smith whom they considered to be in danger.

Johnson tells mainly about his conversion to the Mormon faith, his experiences in Nauvoo with leaders of the Mormon Church and the Nauvoo Legion, and his migration to Utah. Philo mentions a retaliation by Mormon settlers against Native Americans in "Tutullry Valley" because of cattle stealing in 1850. He also mentions his own participation in this event. Handwritten and typewritten biographies, diaries, newspaper clippings, and family genealogical records. Included are biographies of Benjamin F. Johnson (1818-1905), Joel Hill Johnson (1802-1882), and Seth Johnson (1839-1927). The Johnson family joined the Mormon Church in the 1830s, lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, and later migrated to Utah where they settled in various communities.

William Decatur Kartchner autobiography

Handwritten autobiography. Kartchner writes about his early life in Pennsylvania; joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1843 and subsequently moving to Nauvoo, Illinois; and his migration to Utah in 1847. He lived in serveral places in Utah and settled in Arizona. Also included is a partriarchal blessing for Etta Kartchner.

The materials were photocopied from a microfilm collection.

Charles Lambert autobiography

Typescript of an autobiography. Lambert was born in England; converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1843; moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1844; migrated to Utah in 1849; and served on missions in England in 1870 and 1882. He also writes about the "Utah War" and about problems with swarms of crickets.
