Jones was born on 6 September 1838 in Pittsfield, Illinois. He came to Willard, Utah, and later settled in Panaca, Nevada, and Washington and Parowan, Utah. Jones served as bishop and stake president in the Mormon Church and was prosecuted for polygamy.
