Oral history interview of Howard Riley

Typescipt of an interview taken from the included audiocassettes. The interview was conducted by David Jones on 14 August 1985 for Dr. Ray Hillam's Political Science 379R course at Brigham Young University. Roley talks about joining the U.S. Navy out of high school and describes his experiences while on ships off the coasts of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Typescript of an interview conducted by Sarah Lynn Robertson from the included sound tapes. Higgins tells about his training in Hawaii and Texas. He also talks about his deployment to the Philippines. He spent some time on Okinawa and Japan. Higgins also relates his impressions when he returned home.

Grant, his plural wives and his journey to southeast Idaho.

Roll call at the Alamo

Typescript with handwritten corrections of a book manuscript. The item was also authored by Bill Groneman. Rosenthal and Groneman write about the siege of the Alamo in 1836 and present short biographies of the men who defended the fortress. Also included are photocopies of sketches of the soldiers that participated in the battle.

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima / Joe Rosenthal

Materials include one print of Joe Rosenthal's photograph "Raising the flag on Iwo Jima". It depicts five members of the U.S. Armed Forces raising an American flag. The photograph is dated 23 February 1945. There is a note inscribed on the back which reads: "10/21/91 Dear Nelson, Brent Peterson foned [sic.] to ask if I had a print of the flag photo for you. Here 'tis. Cheers, Joe Rosenthal"

Rufty family war correspondence

Contains a small series of correspondence to the Rufty family from related family members serving in World War II. Little is said in the letters about military actions, focusing instead on the well-being of the writer and events at home. Some of the letters are V-mail service communications, reprinted and sent from microfilm. The collection also includes a two-page account of a paratrooper company's involvement in the D-day invasion.

Lynn Marie Stranger was a young woman living in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1963 and gathered materials for a term paper on the D-Day invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944. She wrote to American veterans and this collection is what they sent to her. All the materials relate to the invasion. The diary is from June 8 to July 15 1944.
