William F. Hanson papers

Scope and Contents

Indian opera productions composed by Hanson, musical scores, research material, and scrapbooks and photos based on ceremonies and music of the Ute Indians of Colorado and Utah. Operas included are: "Sun Dance," produced in New York City, 1938, "Bear Dance," and "The Bleeding Heart," a white man's fantasy of an imaginary Indian people who lived at the base of Mount Timpanogos in Utah.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains 65 photographs and 102 negatives (and prints from those negatives) from William F. Hanson. Most of the photographs and negatives are duplicates of material found in the William F. Hanson Papers (MSS 229) and the William F. Hanson Collection (MSS 3340). The images are mainly of Indian opera productions composed by Hanson and of the Ute Indians of Colorado and Utah, as well as several photographs of William F. Hanson himself.

Edward Jackson diary

Scope and Contents Handwritten diary and typewritten transcript. The diary was transcribed by Jackson's sister, Marion Jackson Gilbert, in 1855. Jackson made the overland journey with mules from Independence, Missouri to Sacramento, California in 1849. Long and descriptive daily entries focus on the nature of the California trail, encounters with Indians, and the condition of forts along the way. Several outbreaks of cholera also occurred. Jackson stopped at Salt Lake City and attended Pioneer Day festivities....

John McEwan diary

Scope and Contents Materials include a handwritten diary detailing McEwan's experiences from 1843 to 1858. The diary includes brief entries about his travels from Ireland to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1843, and patriarchal blessings for both McEwan and his wife, Amanda. The majority of the journal contains writings on McEwan's experience as a member of the Elk Mountain Mission to negotiate for land with the Ute Indian tribes in southeastern Utah, from May to October 1855, including getting lost in the mountain...
