Scope and Contents Handwritten diary in two volumes. Phillips made the overland journey by ox team from Indiana to California in 1852, but the diary ends at the Humboldt River in Nevada. Phillips was an enthusiastic traveler and wrote about trail conditions, buffalo hunting, encounters with Indians, price gouging in Nevada, and significant disagreements within his company. Scope and Contents Three volume, leather-bound diary recording Poe's overland journey from Iowa to Oregon and return in 1847-48. Volume 1 is primarily concerned with camping locations and daily mileage. Poe is a terse diarist but does include some details. He writes about seeing 70 Mormon Battalion soldiers and is critical of the Indians, "the most miserable race in the world." Volume 2 mostly describes Oregon's weather. John A. Powel journal

Scope and Contents

Handwritten journal of Powel's overland journey from Illinois to Linn County, Oregon in 1851. Includes daybook of receipts and expenses and a record of marriages performed by Powel. Daily diary entries mostly deal with traveling conditions and the geography of the trail. Early entries mention passing through a Mormon settlement. Powel also briefly notes the death of his daughter, Therissa, from complications related to childbirth.

Scope and Contents Handwritten correspondence from John Purdy to his brother, James, about his overland journey by ox team from Columbus, Ohio, to California in 1849. Purdy is an intelligent and detailed writer. He describes various companies' rules and regulations and his attempts to join a suitable group traveling to California. Scope and Contents

Handwritten records dated 1858 and 1859. These records include information of a company of emigrants from Nebraska City, Nebraska to Genoa, Utah and from Camp Floyd, Utah to Carson Valley, Nevada. Included are accounts of the travels, articles of incorporation, and notes on the meetings of the company. Also included are bound photocopies of the documents.

Scope and Contents Handwritten diary. Shoemaker describes his overland journey from Porter, Cass County, Michigan to Hangtown (later Placerville), California, in 1850. Upon arrival, he "bought a shovel & a pick the gold dust for to dig." Photocopy of a handwritten letter dated 28 June probably in 1854 and written in Fort Laramie, Wyoming. The item was addressed to Dr. C. L. Webster of Elmore, Illinois. Simons describes the overland journey as "long, tedious and tasteless." He also expresses regret for having started the trip.
