Cyrus E. Phillips diaries
Scope and Contents
Handwritten diary in two volumes. Phillips made the overland journey by ox team from Indiana to California in 1852, but the diary ends at the Humboldt River in Nevada. Phillips was an enthusiastic traveler and wrote about trail conditions, buffalo hunting, encounters with Indians, price gouging in Nevada, and significant disagreements within his company. Phillips visited Salt Lake City and gives a brief description. Phillips also writes about his trip by railroad in 1883 to Salt Lake City, Utah, and to Idaho. Also included are advertisements from his businesses.
