Scope and Contents

Handwritten histories, a newspaper clipping, a biography of Agnes Watson Lindsay (1852-1940), and an autobiography of James Lindsay (1849-1938). James Lindsay was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Scotland. He migrated to Utah in 1862; settled in Heber City, Utah; and participated in the Black Hawk War against the Ute Indians. Some of the materials relate to the mail service in Heber City.

Milas Edgar Johnson autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typewritten excerpts of an autobiography. Johnson was born while his parents were migrating to Utah. He lived in numerous places including Fountain Green and Huntington, Utah. He states that he knew Black Hawk, recounts incidents with Ute Indians during the Black Hawk War, served as postmaster in Huntington, and was elected to the Utah state senate. The item was edited by family members who removed some material.

Scope and Contents

Typewritten copy of a story of Indians stealing cattle and horses near Parowan, Utah, on 21 July 1867 during Utah's Black Hawk War. The attempt to take the cattle was thwarted, and the Indians were forced to retreat. The author of the item is unidentified. He writes that he was "nine or ten" at the time of the raid and that his uncle was Joseph Fish, a prominent militia leader in Parowan. The writer also states that he was the brother of Horace Calvin Smith.

Black Hawk committee meeting minutes

Handwritten entries into a book of blank pages. The entries relate to the meetings of the "Black Hawk Committee" of Springville, Utah. The organization commemorated the Black Hawk War between the whites and Indians of Utah. Also included are financial records and a list of men from Springville who participated in the war.

James Lovett Bunting diaries

Scope and Contents Handwritten diaries. Bunting writes about his service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1857 to 1858 and his immigration to Utah in 1858. Bunting describes his preparation for the overland journey, which began at Florence, Nebraska, and the basic geography of the route. He also mentions meeting Colonel Thomas Kane. Thomas Waters Cropper autobiography

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography. Some of the item is in Cropper's own hand. The rest was dictated to his daughters. Cropper was born in Texas, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and migrated to Utah in 1856. One fourth of the original party turned back in 1853 when they heard of the Mormon doctrine of polygamy. He describes the immigrant group killed by Mormons at Mountain Meadows in 1857.
