He herded sheep in Colorado and became involved in a range war between sheep herders and cattlemen. John was shot at several times and was nearly killed. He sold his sheep when he returned to Utah. Photocopy of a microfilmed copy of a typewritten biography. William Henry Grant was born in Mill Creek, Salt Lake County, Utah, in 1849. He lived in American Fork, Utah, married Mary Ann Preston in 1879, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mary and William had no children, but they raised Minnie Brown as their own daughter. He died in 1942.

The biography of Jasper Melvin Hammond (1882-1958) was written "by his wife and daughters" sometime after his death. Jasper, often called Jesse, was born in Providence, Utah but was raised in Marysville, Idaho.
