The materials cover a large number of topics because of Young's involvement in religion, education, government (historical societies), and professional organizations. The diaries were kept while Young was serving as a missionary for the Mormon Church in Switzerland.

Primary correspondents included his son, Mahonri Sharp Young; his first wife, Cecilia Sharp Young; and Mary Lightfoot Tarleton, whom he met in Paris after Cecilia died in 1917. Research files include extensive information on other artists.

Mahonri Mackintosh Young (1877 to 1957) was a notable american artist and sculptor. He was a grandson of Brigham Young and designed many of Utah's well-known monuments, including "The Seagull" and "This is the Place".
