Materials include original letters, one from John K. Kane to Elisha Kent Kane, and another from Thomas L. Kane to John K. Kane that discuss the tragic gun explosion that occured on the USS Princeton during President John Tyler's ceremonial cruise down the Potomac River. The explosion claimed several lives, including some of the the President's advisors, but he was safe. Dated March 5, 1844.

Materials include an original letter from John K. Kane to his son Elisha Kent Kane. It it says that Thomas L. Kane is expected home at any moment, says the Pennsylvania legislature has done well by raising taxes, and describes the personal accomplishments and downfalls of Martin Van Buren. The letter has a pen-written note saying that says "Avalanche" and "October 27, '44". It also has a penciled note saying May 1844. Date of production not identified.

Letter from Elizabeth Kintzing Kane to John K. Kane, dated August 2, 1831, and then forwarded to Jane with a note from John, dated August 5, 1831. The letter is torn and missing some text. Elizabeth says that her husband, Elisha Kane, John's father, is feeling better. John expresses concern about his mother's health to Jane and tells her that their cousin Mary left two days ago. Dated August 2 and 5, 1831.
