Scope and Contents

Materials include original letters, one from John K. Kane to Elisha Kent Kane, and another from Thomas L. Kane to John K. Kane that discuss the tragic gun explosion that occured on the USS Princeton during President John Tyler's ceremonial cruise down the Potomac River. The explosion claimed several lives, including some of the the President's advisors, but he was safe. Dated March 5, 1844.
