Scope and Contents

A collection of five handwritten RSVP letters addressed to Brigham Young and sent from Matthew Caldwell, Reddick Newton Allred, Simmons Philander Curtis, Haden Wells Chruch, and one unknown author. The RSVP letters were written in the month of June of 1863 confirming the guests attending the Mormon Battalion festival in July of that year. Materials dated June 14 to 30, 1863.

Biographical / Historical

Brigham Young was born on June 1, 1801 in Witingham, Vermont. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832, and moved to Kirtland, Ohio. He followed the migration of the Church from Ohio to Missouri to Nauvoo, Illinois. In February 1846, he led the Mormon exodus to the West, and was sustained as the second president of the Church on December 27, 1847. Arriving in Utah he settled in Salt Lake City, and in 1849 was appointed as governor of Utah Territory. Young passed away on August 29, 1877 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Biographical / Historical

Matthew Caldwell was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois on June 11, 1822 to Curits Caldwell and Nancy Hood. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 17, 1846. He served as a private in the Mormon Battalion as a member of Company E. Matthew traveled west to Salt Lake City, Utah with the Mormon pioneers as a member of the Aaron Johnson Company in 1850. He would later move to Spanish Fork, Utah and become the city's first mayor. He died on March 15, 1912 in Dry Fork, Utah.

R.N. (Reddick Newton) Allred was born on February 21, 1822 in Bedford, Tenessee to Isaac Allred and Mary Calvert. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1833 and later moved to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1840.He was a member of the Mormon Battalion in Company A from 1846-1847. He was a member of the Levi Hancock/Jefferson Hunt/James Pace/Andrew Lytle migration companies in 1847 and the Allen Taylor migration company in 1849. Reddick died on October 10, 1905 in Chester, Utah.

S.P. (Simmons Philander) Curtis was born on March 23, 1818 in Sullivan Township, Pennsylvania to Enos Curtis and Ruth Franklin. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832 and later moved to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1841. Simmons was a member of the Mormon Battalion Company D from 1846-1847. He was a member of the Warren Foote western migration company in 1850. Simmons died on April 11, 1880 in Springville, Utah.

Biographical / Historical

H.W. (Haden Wells) Church was born in Franklin, Tennessee on August 29, 1817 to Abraham Church and Mary Joan Emmons. He was a baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois. Haden was a member of the A.O. Smoot and John Banks western migration companies. He also served in the Mormon Battalion as a member of Company B from 1846-1847 and the Detachment of Sick Company in 1847. Haden died in Shady Grove, Tennessee on September 27, 1875 while serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
