Biography
Matthew Caldwell (1822-1912) was a member of the Mormon Battlion Company E.
Matthew Caldwell was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois on June 11, 1822 to Curits Caldwell and Nancy Hood. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 17, 1846. He served as a private in the Mormon Battalion as a member of Company E. Matthew traveled west to Salt Lake City, Utah with the Mormon pioneers as a member of the Aaron Johnson Company in 1850. He would later move to Spanish Fork, Utah and become the city's first mayor. He died on March 15, 1912 in Dry Fork, Utah.

Collection of Mormon Battalion Festival RSVP letters
A collection of five handwritten RSVP letters addressed to Brigham Young and sent from Matthew Caldwell, Reddick Newton Allred, Simmons Philander Curtis, Haden Wells Chruch, and one unknown author. The RSVP letters were written in the month of June of 1863 confirming the guests attending the Mormon Battalion festival in July of that year. Materials dated June 14 to 30, 1863.
