Content Description
Contains a subpoena signed by Samuel C. Owens as Jackson County, Missouri clerk. In the document, Owens ordered Jacob Gregg, Jackson County Sheriff, to bring David Burris before a judge to answer to charges made against in by Harmon G. Noland regarding debt on some land owned by Noland. Dated January 12, 1835. Also includes a picture of a painting of Owens painted by his son Ambrose Young Owens.

Biographical History
Samuel C. Owens (1800-1847) was a Circuit Court Clerk who took part in politics in early Missouri history.
Samuel C. Owens was born on October 6, 1800 in Green County, Kentucky to parents Nathaniel Owens and Nancy Graham. He moved to Franklin County, Missouri in 1818 where he was Circuit Court Clerk and later relocated to Jackson County, Missouri in 1826 where he again became a Circuit Clerk and treasurer. Owens was a part of the committee that ordered the Latter-day Saints to leave Jackson County with the petition of August 20, 1833. He was also known as a Santa Fe trader and in 1838, Owens was one of fourteen of the founders of Town of Kansas.
Samuel C. Owens died on February 28, 1847 in Chihuahua, Mexico at the Battle of Sacramento during the Mexican War.
