Biography

George Armstrong Custer; b. Dec. 5, 1839 in New Rumley, Ohio; d. June 25, 1876 at Little Bighorn River, Montana Territory; U.S. cavalry officer; graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., 1861; served in the Civil War, became brigadier general; killed at Battle of Little Bighorn.

The original materials reside in the Ellison--Camp collection at the Denver Public Library. The items were initialy created and collected by Walter Mason Camp with some materials generated by Robert Ellison. Also included are typescripts of some of the items.

Holograph history of the Washita campaign and the subsequent battle of the Washita describing the movement and actions of the US 7th Cavalry from 22 November to 2 December 1868. The account is very detailed. The exact date of the record's composition is uncertain. It may have been written a number of years after the event. Also included are some observations on Custer and his actions against some hostile Indians when Mathey first met him in 1867.

Detailed handwritten account of his activities during the campaigns against the Cheyenne, Sioux, and Nez Perce tribes during the 1870s. His unit was the first on the scene of Custer's massacre on the Little Bighorn (1876), and he describes the battlefield in great depth, and also provides personal speculations on the specifics of the fight.
