Administrative History
The Department of Physical Education (1920-1942) was an instructional unit at Brigham Young University. The department taught courses in athletics, hygiene, and recreation.
The first physical education class was implemented at Brigham Young Academy in 1887, though it was not until 1910 under the Church Teachers College that a Department of Physical Education was established. It was then placed in the School of Arts and Sciences in 1920. In 1921 the department remained with the College of Arts and Sciences, but in 1932 was transferred to the College of Education. In 1942, it was renamed and reorganized as the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
Department chairs included Eugene L. Roberts (1920-1928), Charles J. Hart (1929), G. Ott Romney (1930-1936), and Charles J. Hart (1937-1942).
