Administrative History
The Department of Accounting (1952-1983) was an instructional unit at Brigham Young University. The department taught courses in accounting practice, commercial law, auditing, and related topics.
The Department of Accounting was established in 1952 in a reorganization of the earlier Department of Accounting and Business Administration. Initially part of the College of Commerce, it was placed in the College of Business in 1959. In 1983 the unit was reorganized as the School of Accountancy.
Department chairs included Robert J. Smith (1952-54), Joseph F. Bentley (1955-1956), H. Verlan Andersen (1957-1958), Robert J. Smith (1959-1961), Bryce E. Orton (1962-67), Karl M. Skousen (1968-1969), Leon W. Woodfield (1970-1971), Karl M. Skousen (1971-1975), Leon W. Woodfield (1975-1976), and K. Fred Skousen (1976-1983).
