Administrative History
The Department of Mechanical Engineering (1977-2004) was an instructional department at Brigham Young University. The unit taught courses in the analysis, design, development, fabrication, and application of mechanical products.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1977 in a reorganization of the earlier Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. The department was initially part of the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology, and remained with the college when it was renamed the College of Engineering and Technology in 1984. The unit was later moved to the newly established Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology in 2004.
Department chairs included Blaine W. Andersen (1978-1982), Joseph C. Free (1982-1992), Geoffrey J. Germane (1992-2004), Alan R. Parkinson (1996-2002), and Larry L. Howell (2002-2004).
