Administrative History
The Physical Plant Department (1954- ) functions to coordinate the building and grounds maintenance of Brigham Young University. The Physical Plant Department, previously the Department of Buildings and Grounds, was established in 1954. The Physical Plant functions under the Physical Facilities Division and is responsible for maintaining university utilities, overseeing engineering and construction, maintaining the grounds, maintaining the buildings (including custodial services), overseeing transportation services, and administering to campus projects. Directors of the department have included Leland M. Perry (1954-1957), Sam F. Brewster (1957-1974), Fred A. Schwendiman (1974), Harold J. Anderson (1979-1986), Douglas Christensen (1986-1990), and Scott Briggs (1990- ).

Collection includes 8 blueprints of the addition to the George H. Brimhall Building created by Nelson in 1935.
Physical Plant Department administrative correspondence and autobiographical materials
Contains brief autobiographical material. Correspondence limited to expressions of gratitude from Ernest Wilkinson and other administrators.
Physical Plant Department aerial photographs
Materials include nine photographs and one rendition. The photographs are aerial views that show the construction of the Wilkinson Activities Center, the Math, Science, and Computer Building (Talmage Building), and the Nicholes Chemical Stores Building. The photographs also show the new football stadium, the Brimhall Building, and the buildings around the Maeser Building. The rendition is of the J. Reuben Clark, Jr. Law School Building. Dated approximately 1970.
Physical Plant Department architectural drawings
Contains architectural plans and designs for buildings and physical facilities on campus. Materials include plans for the Harris Fine Arts Center, the Joseph Smith Building (with revised and remodeled versions), a key drawing for the Maeser Memorial Building, a red line print set "as built" for the Mathematical Science and Computer Building, and plans of BYU heating and the Physical Plant. Materials are on paper and acetate.
Physical Plant Department building inventories
Contains copies of building inventories produced by the Physical Plant Department of Brigham Young University. The inventories list the buildings on campus and some information about them. Materials date from 1984, 1992 to 1996, 2004 to 2005, and 2009.
Physical Plant Department building program requirements records
Consists of the building program requirements for a number of campus additions and remodels. Information consists of space requirements summaries, cost guidelines, justification for the construction of a new building or remodel of an existing structure, approvals, and special considerations.
Physical Plant Department collection of campus facilities histories
Contains multiple scrapbooks/building histories documenting the history of the physical facilities of Brigham Young University up through the 1980s. The collection also contains a few newspaper clippings concerning the Physical Plant Department from 1978-2004. Many of the items were produced by Ephraim Hatch.
