Abstract The contents of this collection represent a cross-section of the legal documents that would have been used in Windsor County, Vermont, just prior to the birth of Joseph Smith, Jr. The other cases paint an interesting picture of the legal environment in which young Joseph grew up. Among the cases are some that deal with debt and wage disputes, divorce suits, counterfeiting and forgery, disputes over land titles, an escape from debtor's prison, family squabbles about who inherits what...

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and printed deeds of personal property including such items as land, stock, clothing, and utensils. These items were deeded to Brigham Young (1801-1877), as trustee in trust for the Mormon Church. One of the items is signed by George Albert Smith, a counselor to Brigham Young.

Scope and Contents

Account books, receipts, correspondence, certificates, newspaper clippings, genealogies, autograph book, land deeds and indetures, legal writs, photographs, and patriarchal blessings. The materials relate to business and legal activities. Also included are anti-Mormon newspaper clippings from England. Many of the items were produced by Young's sister, Lydia Young Merrill.
