Abstract

Includes typewritten and handwritten biographies of William Rufus Rogers Stowell. Also included are typed excerpts from the biography and photocopies of an account of Stowell's death handwritten by his grandson, Earl Stowell. William Stowell was a convert to the Mormon Church. He lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, migrated to Utah in 1852, served in the Utah Militia during the Utah Expedition, served on missions for the Mormon Church, and went to Mexico to avoid prosecution for polygamy.

Elijah Bishop diary

Handwritten diary dated from 7 April 1822 to 20 Jan. 1829. Bishop states, "Elijah Bishop is my name, and American is my nation, Elizabeth Town is my dwelling place, and Christ is my salvation." The manuscript documents the regligious odyssey of a man of upstate New York, ranging from a spiritual visionary ecstasy to a time of virtual despair. A few entries are in code, reflecting Bishop's intense concern with the daily state of his spiritual conditon. There are many gaps in the diary.
