Carpenter family histories

 Collection — Folder: 1
Identifier: MSS SC 1507

Scope and Contents

This collection contains separate transcribed copies of the Carpenter Family. The first document, by J. Hatten Carpenter, describes the origin of the last name "Carpenter." The author begins the family history starting in 1200 in France and England. He then continues with the ancestry of the Carpenter family, who emigrated from England to the United States. The second copy is a sketch biography of Margarett McCullough. The sketch contains a transcript of Erastus Snow Carpenter's letter about his mother, Margarett, to his son Joseph L. Carpenter. It also includes a note by Margaret Carpenter Smith (Margaret McCullough's granddaughter). This biography was written and transcribed by the second great granddaughter Salome Smith Hunter (1901-1976). The third copy, written by Laura Smith, includes a transcribed note of the history of the first choir in the valley. Joseph L. Carpenter sent the note in 1963. It also includes information about General John Steele (1758-1827) from Pennsylvania and copies of temple records of John Steele Carpenter (1822-1852). This third copy contains a short biography of Margarett McCullough and more information about the death of John Gheen from different sources. Materials are dated 1963-1970.
