Joseph Hatten Carpenter was born on April 4, 1861 at Devonport, Devonshire, England to Robert Wright Carpenter and Elizabeth Link Hatten. After completing his studies he worked for a large mercantile firm in London, and in 1886 decided to help settle Australia. The following year he voyaged to San Francisco with the intention of living in California, but he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ended up in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he worked in the Salt Lake County recorder's office. He then served a three-year mission in Samoa. Upon returning home, he moved to Manti, Utah and obtained employment as city recorder for Manti, then at the Manti City Bank, where he worked for sixteen years. In March 1911, Joseph quit his job to become a full-time recorder in the Manti Temple. He also actively participated in the Genealogical Society of Utah. In 1953, at the age of ninety-three, he retired as temple recorder but continued to conduct genealogical research. He died at home in Manti, Utah on December 10, 1964.

Margarett McCullough was born on October 15, 1822, to John McCullough and Eliza Ann Stilley, in Centerville, New Castle, Delaware. Margarett married John Steele Carpenter on September 19, 1844. Together they had four children. Margarett was widowed after eight years of marriage. She and her small family emigrated west to Utah with the help of her brother-in-law, Joseph Crossgrove. Margarett was a member of the Jacob Hoffhein wagon train from April-September 1857. Upon arrival in Salt Lake, the McCullough family were members of the 8th ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Margarett married John Gheen on August 7, 1858, and together they had one daughter. After the sudden death of John, Margarett married Robert Boyd Stewart on August 20, 1861, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had two children. Margarett and Robert settled the area now known as Glendale, Kane, Utah. During her life, Margarett served as the treasurer of the Relief Society. Margarett died on December 4, 1915, in Glendale, Kane, Utah.

Joseph Lancaster Carpenter was born on July 11, 1881, to Erastus Snow Carpenter and Julia Ann Van Orden, in Glendale, Utah. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southwestern states in 1903. On April 6, 1908, He married Jensine Antonette Jensen in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had one child. Joseph died on December 21, 1968, in Thatcher, Arizona.

Salome Carpenter Smith was born on October 11, 1901, to Jacob Nephi Smith and Margaret Ellen Carpenter, in Glendale, Utah. She is the second great granddaughter of early Utah settler, Margarett McCullough. Salome married Lamont Williams Hunter on December 14, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had five children. Salome died on October 26, 1976, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
