Scope and Contents

Materials contain papers relating to Nathan Van Noy regarding his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, death, and posthumous award of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Several articles from the Grace Herald are included, as well as an excerpt from the book "'Gems' of Our Valley," a cartoon representation of Van Noy's actions, and other accounts of Van Noy's actions. Recounts Van Noy's heroic actions during an attack of the Japanese: tells of how, a few days before the events that caused him to be awarded the Medal of Honor, Van Noy was injured and suffered from ear infections, but refused to be evacuated to a base hospital because he believed he was needed where he was. Describes one night the Japanese made a secret attack with three barges, and his determination to stay despite grenades landing everywhere around him and orders to retreat. Described how he took more than half of the landing force by himself before he was killed. Dated 1943-1948, 1977, approximately 2000.
