Mormon emigration records

 Collection — Folder: 1
Identifier: MSS 4150

Scope and Contents

Papers about the emigration of Mormons from England to Utah. Writers of letters include Godfrey Lushington, Julian Pauncefote, M. J. Hoppin, A. F. G. Liddell, J. Vaughan, William M. Everts E. Y. N. Henerson. They are all men in service of the British government (in the United States Charge of Affairs), and correspond under the direction of the Queen of England. The British government's United States Charge of Affairs seems to be in a panic about the "evils" connected with Mormon immigration to the United States. The United States Government has asked for Britain's cooperation with putting an end to the adoption of Mormon doctrines by British subjects. J. Vaughan (from the Police Court) responds to this idea in his 1879 letter to Honorable A. F. G. Liddell. He writes that the British government does not have power to "institute inquisitional examinations into the private opinions which British subjects hold on questions of Religion or morality." There are proposals to put into the British newspaper a caution against joining the Mormon church.
