Scope and Contents
Collection includes correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, and other materials from the Gall and Hissrich families documenting their experiences during the First and Second World Wars. Also included in the collection are compact discs with digital reproductions of the World War I photographs and World War II correspondence.

Biographical History
The Hissrich family were an American family in Pennsylvania. Richard Edgar Hissrich (1914-2011) served in the United States Army during the Second World War. In August 1942 he began corresponding with Mary Agnes Gall, and they were married on April 12, 1943 in Los Angeles, California. They had one child during the war, Mary Louise Hissrich (b. 1944). Soon after the war they had two more children, Barbara Ellen (b. 1946) and Richard Albert (b. 1948). These children were later followed by John Edward (b. 1960).
Biographical History
The Gall family were German immigrants in Pennsylvania. Albert Alfred Gall (1886-1946) immigrated with his family to Pittsburgh in 1897. He married Ethel Mary Maass (1895-1971) following his service in World War I, and together they had one child -- Mary Agnes Gall (1920-1992). She married Richard Edgar Hissrich in 1943.

Abstract
This collection includes thirteen boxes of World War II correspondence between Mary Agnes Gall (Hissrich) and Richard E. Hissrich; World War II memorabilia including photographs, medals, articles of clothing, etc. It also includes one box of correspondence between Albert Gall and Ethel Maass during WWI; photographs from WWI; and other memorabilia relating to WWI. Also included in the collection are discs containing digitized images of the WWI photographs and the WWII correspondence.
Custodial History
Collection was donated between 2005 and 2006. Prior to its donation it was kept by the daughter of the creators, Barbara Culatta, who obtained them from the creators, her parents Richard E. and Mary Agnes Hissrich.

Appraisal
This collection belongs in Utah and American West and LDS cultural, social, and religious history (20th Century Western & Mormon Manuscripts collection development policy, 5.VII, 2007) because it provides primary source material to students at Brigham Young University regarding World War I and II. Because of this it supports research and teaching of important events in the history of our country. It provides a homefront perspective of each of these wars through the letters and photgraphs and also shows the destruction of Europe through photographs.
