Scope and Contents

The Argosy Pictures Corporation records documents the operations of this independent motion picture company through its pre-war Argosy Corporation and post-war Argosy Pictures Corporation phases, spanning 1913 to 1958 (bulk 1939 to 1957). The records provide insight into the legal, financial, and tax aspects of film production, as well as the creative process of identifying story material and researching projects prior to production. Materials include internal and external correspondence; legal, financial, and personnel records; contracts; and documentation of both produced and unproduced films. Corporate records cover incorporation documents, by-laws, stockholder lists, ledgers, budgets, tax returns, and dissolution files. Film-related materials include contracts and correspondence for ten produced films such as "The Fugitive," "Fort Apache," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," and "Wagonmaster," and extensive script development files with synopses, tear sheets, and correspondence for approximately 450 story properties by notable authors including Pearl S. Buck, Raymond Chandler, and Aldous Huxley. Additional series document research on 3-D and Cinerama technologies, title registrations, unrealized ventures in television and international production, and subsidiary companies such as Shoestring Productions. The collection also contains photographs (including images from China), a scrapbook of trade clippings, and other supporting documentation.

Biographical / Historical

During Hollywood's Golden Era, most films were produced by the Big Eight studios, leaving little room for independent filmmakers. Seeking creative freedom, director John Ford and producer-director Merian C. Cooper founded Argosy Corporation in 1939 to make films without studio interference. Ford, known for his efficient direction and family-centered stories, and Cooper, an adventurer and innovator in Technicolor and aviation, first collaborated at RKO in the 1930s. Argosy's early project, "The Long Voyage Home" (1940), failed, and World War II halted further plans as both men served in the military—Ford in the OSS and Cooper with the Flying Tigers. After the war, amid challenges to the studio system and HUAC investigations, Ford and Cooper created Argosy Pictures Corporation in 1945, incorporated in Delaware for tax benefits. Backed by investors like William Donovan, the company signed a four-picture deal with RKO and operated from the historic Pathe lot, using RKO's story department resources. By 1947, the company expanded its staff, adding key figures like Donald Dewar (vice president) and Bea Benjamin (treasurer), along with a dedicated story department. Argosy produced "Fort Apache" (1948), the first of Ford's celebrated "cavalry trilogy," followed by "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "Rio Grande." It also made "3 Godfathers" (1948) for MGM and partnered with RKO to create ARKO, Inc. for "Mighty Joe Young" (1949). Cooper explored ventures in television, 3-D, and Cinerama, though financial constraints limited progress. Argosy completed its RKO contract with "Wagon Master" (1950), but disputes over distribution and RKO's refusal to approve "The Quiet Man" led Argosy to move to Republic Pictures. To reduce debt, Argosy sold rights to its earlier films and ARKO holdings to RKO in 1951. At Republic, Ford finally made "The Quiet Man" (1952), Argosy's greatest success, though financial disputes with Republic resulted in a lawsuit settled in 1956. Argosy's last film was "The Sun Shines Bright" (1953). Despite producing ten notable films, Ford and Cooper never achieved full independence. The company sold its remaining rights in 1954 and formally dissolved in 1956. Both founders died in 1973.
