Contains original and reproduction black and white photographs of Brigham Young University sports teams that Simmons played on. Also includes a class picture, and a group image from a summer school at the University of Illinois. Materials dated approximately 1908 to -1935.

Biographical History

E. Lee Simmons (1888-1972) was a physical education supervisor in Utah. Ezra Lee Simmons was a born on November 7, 1888 in Payson, Utah to Nathan Lee Simmons and Amy Daniels. He attended Brigham Young University High School, graduating in 1907. He the continued his studies at the university. In 1912 he returned to Payson, Utah where he taught school in Utah and Tooele counties. In 1915 he married Neta Seabury in Salt Lake City, Utah. They eventually had three children. Simmons and his family moved to Salt Lake City in 1921, when he began working in physical education at East High School alongside Ott Romney. During this time he completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Utah. In 1937 he was appointed as supervisor of physical education for the Salt Lake Board of Education. He completed a master's degree in Education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Simmons retired from the school district in 1954. He passed away on January 30, 1972 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Custodial History

E. Lee Simmons left the photogaphs to his daughter, Carol Lee Simmons Loock, who left them to her daughter, Merrilee Petersen. Merrilee Petersen donated the materials to the repository in 2019.
