Scope and Contents

Includes a photocopy of Langley Allgood Bailey's diary, kept from about 1885 to 1927, and provides an autobiographical sketch of Bailey's early life, his journey as a pioneer in the Martin handcart company, and his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Also includes a scrapbook kept by Langley with documents and articles related to his life and his obituary in 1928. The scrapbook also includes several original poems and was kept in a Juab Stake Annual Report ledger, Langely having been a stake clerk. Also includes a portrait and a brief life description of Harriet Goble Garrett, another member of the Martin Handcart Company, created approximately 1880.

Biographical history

Langley Allgood Bailey (1838-1929) was a Mormon handcart pioneer, missionary to England, and early settler of Utah.

Langley Allgood Bailey was born in 1838 to Jane Allgood and Henrey Williams in Leicestershire, England. He spent his childhood years there then later imigratted to the U.S. with his parents and siblings in 1856. He was a member of the Martin handcart company and served a mission to England in 1885. He was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a clerk keeping detailed financial records for the church. He married Sarah Andrews in 1861 and they were the parents of twelve children. He later married Sarah Emma Warner in 1883 and had five children with her. He died September 13th 1929 in Nephi, Juab County, Utah.

Harriet Goble Garrett (1850-1890) was a Mormon handcart pioneer and early settler of Nephi, Utah.

Harriet Goble Garrett was born in England to Mary and William Goble in 1850.She sailed to America in 1856 and became a member of the John A. Hunt handcart company. She is sister to Mary Goble Pay, an ancestor of Marjorie Pay Hinckley, wife of LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley. She died in 1890.

Shirley R. Allen (1941- ) is the great-great granddaughter of Langley Allgood Bailey and the great granddaughter of Harriet Goble Garrett.

Shirley R. Allen was born in 1941 and lives in Utah. She is descended from several early Latter-day Saint pioneers including Langley Allgood Bailey and Harriet Goble Garret, both of whom were members of the Martin handcart company.
