Biography

Frederick William Benteen; born August 24, 1834, Petersburg, Virginia; died June 22, 1898, Atlanta, Georgia; Served in the American Civil War in the Union Army; also the United States Army during the Indian Campaigns including the Great Sioux War and the 7th U.S. Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn; moved with family from Petersburg, Virginia to St. Louis, Missouri in 1849.

Scope and Contents Photostat copies of four handwritten and signed letters dated 2 July, 23 July, 24 July, and 30 July of 1876. Each item was addressed to Benteen's wife. Benteen writes about the Battle of the Little Bighorn, which took place on 25-26 June 1876, and his actions in the encounter. Also included is a photostat copy of a 25-page handwritten account of the Battle of the Little Bighorn written by Benteen on an uncertain date.
