Biography

William Addington Martindale (1814-1873) was a farmer and early member and missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. William Addington Martindale was born June 11, 1814, in Washington, Wayne County, Indiana, to James Martindale and Elizabeth Addington. In 1833, William married Mahalia Stigleman and together they had 2 children: William Clinton Martindale and Martha Jane Martindale. On January 20, 1840, William was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mahalia could not accept William's new faith which led to the couples' divorce later that same year and the marriage of William to his new wife, Elizabeth Bunnell. William had moved to Nauvoo with the Saints, but just a few years later was forced to move with them to Winter Quarters, Nebraska. William was then called to serve a mission, the first of many he would serve in his lifetime. He served in Indiana, Ohio, Texas and other southern states. As a result of these missions, William crossed the plains as a pioneer several times. He began to practice polygamy and married Rebecca Haines, Isobel Pratt and Kindness Ann Haines Badger. Throughout his life William worked as a farmer and agriculturist. Eventually, William Addington Martindale took his family and settled in Duncan's Retreat in southern Utah where he passed away on February 14, 1873.
