Biographical History

Stephen L. Richards (1879-1959) was a lawyer and ecclesiastical leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

Stephen L Richards, born in Mendon, Utah in 1879, was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from January 8, 1917, to April 9, 1951. Richards also served as First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church under President David O. McKay from April 9, 1951, until his death on May 19, 1959.

Two typewritten photocopies of an address for the General Conference of the Mormon Church in April 1932, newspaper clippings, and one photocopy of pages 66 and 67 of a General Conference report booklet. Richards attacks dogmatism, intolerance, and bigotry as highly destructive and as enemies of the Mormon faith. The General Conference booklet does not include any kind of information concerning Richards' controversial address.
