The Smith family began with the marriage of Sarah Farr Smith (1849-1921), and John Henry Smith (1848-1911), on October 20, 1866, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had 11 children: John Henry, George Albert, Lorrin Farr, Don Carlos, Ezra Chase, Charles Warren, Winslow Farr, Nathaniel Libby, Nancy Claire, Tirzah Priscilla, and Else Louise. John Henry Smith was a politician and ecclesiastical leader in Utah. The family resided in Salt Lake City, and Ogden, Utah.
