Administrative History

The Forest Reserve Act of 1891 and the Organic Act of 1897 authorized the United States president to protect specific forest timber and watersheds, called reserves. This protection was administered by the General Land Office. In 1905, the United States Congress renamed these reserves national forests, and created the Forest Service to oversee them. In 1908, six administrative districts were created, including the Intermountain District, later renamed Region. Its headquarters was built at 507 25th Street in Ogden, Utah, in 1933.
