The Department of Spanish and Portuguese (established 1968) is an instructional unit at Brigham Young University.
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese was created within the College of Humanities in 1968, after being in a division of the earlier Department of Languages. It provides instruction in Spanish and Portuguese languages.
Department chairs have included M. Carl Gibson (1968-1980), C. Dixon Anderson (1980-1983), Thomas E. Lyon (1983-1990), Merlin H. Forster (1990-1994), John R. Rosenberg (1994-1998), Christopher C. Lund (1998-2001), J. Halvor Clegg (2001-2005), Alvin F. Sherman, Jr. (2005-2011), and David P. Laraway (2011- ).
