George Q. Cannon letters to John Steel
Two ALS's written from Washington, D.C. to John Steele of Toquerville, Utah. The 1875 letter replies to a request made by Steele for remuneration from the Postmaster General. The 1877 letter concerns a bill to grant pensions to Mexican War veterans and another bill for the reclamation of desert lands. Both letters are written on House of Representatives letterhead.

Robert Carson letter
Handwritten and signed letter written at Santa Fe, New Mexico and addressed to Carson's "Honored old friends" in Howard County, Missouri. Carson briefly recounts experiences and news about the war including the tremendous death toll from disease, the putting down of an "insurrection," and the activities and battles of General Alexander William Doniphan on the way to El Paso, Texas.
Cartoons lampooning the United States Army
Eleven reproduced pen-and-ink drawings on one sheet of paper. The cartoons are by an unknown author and poke fun at and lampoon the nature of life in the United States Army.
Centennial Campaign: the Sioux War of 1876
Typewritten book draft and galley proofs with handwritten corrections. The items are a draft of a book which Gray originally entitled: "Whip Them into Subjection." The book draft was published by the Old Army Press as the "Centennial Campaign" and deals with the 1876 war between the United States and the Dakota Indians.
Peter Sutton election certificate
Photocopy of a printed and handwritten certificate. The document confirms the election of Peter Sutton to be a major of the First Battalion of the Calvary and Infantry of the Utah Militia. The item was issued under the authority of the territorial governor of Utah, Charles Durkee, who also signed the certificate.
Mariano Leal y Arnajo
Handwritten and printed certificate in Spanish appointing Leal y Arnajo to a captaincy of the Guanajuato national guard under Manuel Echeverria. The item is dated 28 Aug. 1850.
Brigham Young certificate of appointment for W. S. S. Willis
Printed form with handwritten notations. The item is dated 11 March 1851 and signed by Almon W. Babbitt and Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church. W. S. S. Willis is appointed as captain of Company B, Battalion of Infantry in Lehi, Utah.
James H. Martineau certificates
Printed and handwritten certificates, bonds, and commissions. The items document Martineau's commission in the Utah Militia, his appointment as the Sheriff of Iron County, Utah, and his position as an alderman of Parowan, Utah. Seven of the manuscripts were signed by Brigham Young (1801-1877), the second president of the Mormon Church.
David H. Chapman letter
Handwritten and signed letter dated 1832. Chapman affirms that Jesse P. Harmon has been elected First Lieutenant in the Erie County Volunteer infantry.
