Glass plate negative of family group on Yellowstone River, 1887
Glass plate negative of female dog on rear haunches, 1887
Female dog sitting upright on her rear haunches, and it is clear that she recently delivered a litter of puppies. My guess is that this was Billy Hofer's dog and that the photo was taken outside his cabin near Cinnabar, Montana.
Glass plate negative of Gardiner, Montana, 1885
Spectacular photograph of the western portion of Gardiner, Montana, about 1885 (when this first bridge over Yellowstone River was built), from south bank of Yellowstone River looking northeast to Oregon Mountain and Palmer Mountain. In those days, this was the only bridge to allow Gardiner residents access to the north side of the river and a road that even then traveled northeast to the prospecting diggings of Bear Gulch, an 1865 gold strike that became Jardine, Montana in 1898.
Glass plate negative of high mountain tops, 1887
View of high mountain tops, similar to #1: (#1: Summit of unknown mountain looking out to tops of many other mountain peaks, probably Absaroka Range in Yellowstone National Park). Possibly taken by Billy Hofer on one of his trips to the summits of the Absaroka Range.
Glass plate negative of ice crystals in a doorway, 1887
Feathery ice crystals on outside of door, perhaps at Billy Hofer's cabin near Cinnabar, Montana.
Glass plate negative of Mount Everts in Yellowstone National Park, 1887
A slope of Mount Everts in Yellowstone National Park.
Glass plate negative of Mount Everts in Yellowstone National Park, 1887
Same as #23, but slightly different vantage point, looking up Mount Everts. I am pretty sure I can find this exact spot, taken from the main road through Gardner Canyon.
(#23: slope of Mount Everts in Yellowstone National Park).
Glass plate negative of older man (probably Billy Hofer) seated at table smoking a pipe, 1887
Unidentified man in cabin, but I think it is Billy Hofer late in life, probably taken in Washington State. When I click back and forth between this photo and #7 [Billy Hofer's meal in his cabin in Cinnabar, Montana], I see that the nose, the ear, the parting of the hair, the mustache, and even the blue eyes are the same in each photo!
Glass plate negative of unnamed rock outcropping in Gardiner, Montana, 1887
Striking, unnamed rock outcropping in Gardiner, Montana area, just below Sepulcher Mountain.
Glass plate negative of volcanic rock formation, 1887
Unknown rock formation that is clearly volcanic in nature so it probably was taken either inside Yellowstone National Park or outside to the east in the Absaroka Range. Two people can be seen climbing on the lower part of the pinnacles.
