August "Specimen" Schmidt, Cinnabar resident, holding Paul Hoppe who grew up to be the buffalo keeper in Yelowstone National Park. Hofer has apparently shaken his reins and the entire train is walking forward.

Photo of Elwood T. "Uncle Billy" Hofer, in his cabin at Cinnabar (complete with cheesecake pictures on the wall) and eating a meal that makes this entire collection so important, and this image is probably the most important one in the collection, which will be used by Scott Herring in his upcoming (now complete) biography of Billy Hofer.. Identifiable in his meal are buiscuits, corn on the cob, and a bottle of booze.

Scope and Contents

At least eleven children and their woman chaperone are playing on large boulders on the north bank of Yellowstone River, near Cinnabar, Montana. The photo looks west toward the ridge of Electric Peak. They were outside of Yellowstone National Park then, but the opposite (south) bank of the river is, today, inside the park. At that time, the town of Cinnabar was located on the opposite bank and out of sight of the camera's vantage point.
