The correspondence is generally family news with a few business letters, two missionary letters from Wales and a description of Mattie Isgreen's travel in Hawaii. Also included are an invitation to a ball, 1896, the Democratic ticket for Provo, Utah, ca. 1900, and a thought on prayer.

The item was written in the third person. Jarvis migrated to the United States with his family and came to Utah in 1860. He had problems with his feet while walking to Utah. Handwritten diaries for the years 1883-1885 and 1894-1896. Johnson kept these records while serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Great Britain. Two of the volumes are about the first mission while four are about the second.

He was also sent to the United States to fight Americans in 1815. After the war, he returned to Scotland.
