Young was a businessman who served two missions to Hawaii (1873-1875 and 1883) and helped organize the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Associations in numerous places for the Mormon Church. He married Armeda Snow who was the daughter of the fifth president of the Mormon Church, Lorenzo Snow (1814-1901).
