James I. Steel autobiography and family records

Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with family records apparently also copied by Steel. James Steel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. He later settled in Tooele County, Utah. Steel entered into polygamy in 1874. Also included are ordinations and patriarchal blessings of family members. Steel also writes about his visions and dreams.

The author of the item, son of Charles Baynes (1798- ), was born in Clinton, Georgia in 1824. He lived in Georgia, attended college in New Haven, Connecticut (probably Yale University), and eventually settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. Included are two depositions by Benjamin Harrison regarding land suits; an appointment of a county sheriff signed by James Pleasants; appointments of six Justices of the Peace by Joseph Johnson, three by John Letcher, four by Henry Wise, and three by Francis Pierpont; and an appointment of county surveyor Joshua Pretlow.

Edmund C. Babcock letters

Contains eighteen handwritten letters to Elizabeth B. Lampman, all but one having postmarked envelopes, written between July to August 1903 by Edmund C. Babcock; there are also two letters written by an anonymous person or persons, located in the letter of July 16th written from Cripple Creek, Colorado. Letters document Babcock's travels through Yellowstone National Park as the secretary of the Brooklyn Christian Endeavor Union.
