The materials relate to Bennion's personal, educational, business, and religious activities. The largest amount of the materials relate to his speeches. The bulk of correspondence is between other apostles and general authorities of the Mormon Church.

The items include personal history documents (1853-1903), stories and poems (1824-1887), journals (1849-1884), photographic material (1850-1906), correspondence (1849-1878), and a scrapbook of obituaries and published articles by and about John Lyon.

The materials cover a large number of topics because of Young's involvement in religion, education, government (historical societies), and professional organizations. The diaries were kept while Young was serving as a missionary for the Mormon Church in Switzerland.
