Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a handwritten diary. Candland writes about joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his life in Salt Lake Valley and in Sanpete County, Utah. He talks about his polygamous marriages, the Utah Expedition, and the birth and deaths of children. The item includes a major gap between 1863 and 1900.

Scope and Contents Collection includes Candland's personal diary, covering 1841 to 1861, and with brief entries on his birthday in both 1900 and 1901. Candland documents his missionary service in the British Isles in the 1840s, and in the Eastern States and Canada in the early 1850s. He also describes some of his experiences during the Utah War of 1857 and 1858. A typescript of the diary is also included. Also includes photocopies of pamphlets in defense of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...
