Biography of William Rufus Rogers Stowell

Abstract

Includes typewritten and handwritten biographies of William Rufus Rogers Stowell. Also included are typed excerpts from the biography and photocopies of an account of Stowell's death handwritten by his grandson, Earl Stowell. William Stowell was a convert to the Mormon Church. He lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, migrated to Utah in 1852, served in the Utah Militia during the Utah Expedition, served on missions for the Mormon Church, and went to Mexico to avoid prosecution for polygamy.

Photocopies of a typewritten autobiography and typewritten biographies. Stephen and Eliza Lewis Farnsworth lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, Utah, and Arizona. Eliza L. Farnsworth Gilbert writes about her early life in Jerrico, Joseph City, Salt Lake City, and Roosevelt, Utah. The date of the composition of these items is uncertain.

George Cannon biography

Photocopy of a typed biography of George Cannon, English convert to the Mormon Church, who emigrated to the United States and settled in Nauvoo. He made coffins for the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and his brother, Hyrum, and plaster casts of their heads.

Collection includes typewritten copies of family histories, correspondence, and biographies believed to have been compiled by Rachel Maretta Homer Crocket. The materials relate to the Homer and Crockett families that were associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for many years. The items cover a wide range of topics over many years. Included are biographies of Russell King Homer, William Harrison Homer, and Rose Homer Widtsoe.

Seth Johnson family history

Handwritten and typewritten biographies, diaries, newspaper clippings, and family genealogical records. Included are biographies of Benjamin F. Johnson (1818-1905), Joel Hill Johnson (1802-1882), and Seth Johnson (1839-1927). The Johnson family joined the Mormon Church in the 1830s, lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, and later migrated to Utah where they settled in various communities.

Photocopy of a handwritten biography of Albert Merrill. Merrill was born on Long Island, New York; joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1841; moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1843; migrated to Utah in 1852; and settled in Provo, Utah. He served on a mission for the Church to the Eastern States from 1869 to 1870 and was made a patriarch of the Church in 1873.

Job Smith autobiography and letters received

Typewritten autobiography and photocopies of handwritten letters received by Smith. Also included are typescripts of Job Smith's "Recollections" of the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and photocopies of handwritten and typewritten certificates. The letters are from prminent Mormon Church leaders. Also included is a photocopy of a handwritten patriarchal blessing received by Smith.

John L. Smith papers

Scope and Contents Contains seven journals of John Lyman Smith, and other autobiographical manuscripts, as wells as a bound typescript volume of an autobiography/journal. The journals include accounts of persecutions in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois, pioneering in Utah, Lyman's two missions to Europe, and his service as president of the Swiss-Italian and the Swiss-Italian-German missions.
