Born in Oneida County, New York, 22 September 1822; son of Oliver Artemus Stowell and mary Stephens Holmes. (First Par in 1846 Guide). Moved to Musquetoe Creek near Council Bluffs in the spring 1848. The winter 1849-1850 Apostle John Taylor instructs him to gather to Utah, came with Captain David Evan's company. Stayed with Edward Dalton in Salt Lake city on their arrival then moved to Provo in 1851. In 1852 his wife divorced him and in October 1852 he married Cynthia Jane Park. Became member of Provo Militia and was sent to Iron County in 1855 during Indian disturbances. Moved again, this time to Fillmore. Assisted in Captal Building construction. In June 1855 moved to Weber county. Married plural wife Sophronia Kelly 9 October 1855. Moved in the spring of 1857 to Ogden. During Utah War he was appointed Adjutant to Major Joseph Taylor battallion of infantry; took command of company and captured by U.S. Army and tried for treason, but escaped. The weather being too cold, they turned themselves in to the U.S. Army Camp; attempts on his life; released by new governor and went to Salt lake City and to Utah valley to meet family. Finally came back to Ogden in August 1858; moved from Ogden City to a farm on East Bench in 1862. Worked on railroad in 1867-1868; began geneology work for family members; called on a mission 1884 to eastern States; visited Minnesota, Illinois, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Michigan, Iowa; visited old Nauvoo; arrives back in Utah August 26, 1984; worked at Logan temple; visited California.
